East Asian Art History

Why this program?

The primary focus of the East Asian Art History program is the study of art objects from China, Japan, and Korea, from their historical development and regional interconnections, to their movements between East Asia and the West. The program’s particular strength lies in its international character and practice-oriented training.

Visiting professors and guest lecturers from renowned international institutions regularly teach courses and hold talks at our department. In addition, we also organize international excursions on a regular basis.

Our program provides our candidates with the opportunity to participate in research projects in which they can directly handle and examine artworks in museums or private collections. In Switzerland, the East Asian Art History study program is unique to the University of Zurich

What can I do with it later?

A Master's in East Asian Art History opens many professional avenues within this field in Switzerland and beyond.Graduates often find work in museum contexts, where they are responsible for curating and researching the East Asian collections. Furthermore, there are positions at universities and other educational institutions for experts in East Asian art history. In addition, there is a demand for East Asian art specialists in galleries, auction houses and art dealerships. Related employment opportunities can also be found in the fields of journalism, tourism, and publishing.

We highly recommend our students to explore different career prospects while doing their Masters's and gain valuable professional experience as research assistants or interns.
