Markus started his scientific journey by gaining early laboratory experience as a lab technician in chemistry. His educational path led him to a bachelor's degree in Molecular Life Science at the University of Applied Sciences in Muttenz. It was during his master's thesis in the Bodenmiller lab at the University of Zurich that Markus focused on the characterisation of the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition in breast cancer using advanced mass cytometry techniques. This experience sparked his fascination for high-dimensional data.

Markus continued his academic career as a PhD student in the Bachmann group, where he focused on elucidating the pathomechanism of Bardet-Biedl syndrome. He is particularly interested in understanding the tissue-specific changes induced by mutations in the primary cilium, a nearly ubiquitous cellular structure. Markus' research employs next-generation omics approaches to unravel the genetic and translational changes underlying ciliopathies. Through his scientific endeavours, Markus aims to contribute to our understanding of these complex genetic conditions.
