What does a Diversity Manager do?

Roughly summarised, the aim is to create the framework conditions for diversity by ensuring equal opportunities and promoting an inclusive working environment. Diversity managers work with top management to define a strategy, objectives and measures for their implementation. They advise, raise awareness and organise training sessions and workshops. They are in close dialogue with employees across hierarchical levels and departments as well as with various authorities, associations and specialist departments. They also collect and analyse data and compile reports and statistics.

How do you become a Diversity Manager?

There are various training and further education programmes, and universities are also increasingly addressing the topic of diversity and inclusion. However, there is no standardised career path. In addition to professional skills such as a basic knowledge of economics, psychology or sociology and an in-depth understanding of human resource management and organisational development, a high level of social competence, openness and willingness to change are also helpful.

Why is it important for companies to promote diversity?

Diversity & inclusion is not only a question of fairness, but also an important driver of corporate success - this has been empirically proven many times over. Diversity management also increases the talent pool, enabling companies to respond to the shortage of skilled labour. Employee satisfaction and commitment are also increased when individual potential is recognised, valued and promoted.

What can everyone do?

Diversity managers can set the framework by means of strategy, objectives and measures, but the success of Diversity & Inclusion is shaped by all employees: by approaching people openly, being curious about new things and different ways of thinking and treating each other fairly, inclusively and with respect. Managers in particular are very important for strengthening Diversity & Inclusion, as they make personnel decisions, act as role models and shape the corporate culture.
