What does a risk manager do?

A risk manager is responsible for determining the company's risk appetite together with the company management. They must identify potential risks that could affect the company. These include internal risks such as fraud or cyber security issues or external risks such as market, economic or reputational risks. Secondly, the risks must be assessed to determine which are the most urgent and serious and which measures should be taken. Risk management strategies also need to be developed and implemented.

What is particularly challenging about this job?

The biggest challenge is to have a comprehensive understanding of the risks and opportunities facing the company and to develop effective measures to minimise these risks and maximise opportunities. The pandemic has shown how quickly risk situations can change. Risk managers have had to react quickly and develop measures to ensure the health and safety of employees, reduce business disruption and ensure that the company remains solvent and avoids financial shortfalls.

Why is it important for companies to invest in this area?

Because risk management can help to identify, analyse and minimise potential risks and threats before they cause significant damage to the company.

What does risk management mean to you personally?

Risk management is a fascinating and challenging field in which I can make a valuable contribution thanks to my broad knowledge horizon from various industries. Effective risk management requires an understanding of the various risk categories that can affect a company, as well as the ability to understand complex interrelationships and interactions.

What advice do you have for students who are interested in this job?

Risk management requires an understanding of many different topics and disciplines, such as finance, law, IT, engineering and insurance. Internships or student traineeships can help to deepen your understanding and skills. Risks are constantly changing, so it is important to stay informed about current (industry) developments and trends.
