The Dominicans and the making of Florence cultural identity

Florence, the celebrated city-republic, dominates the historiography of medieval Italy still today. The birth and growth of the Mendicant Orders paralleled the rise of urban Europe. As attention to medieval cities has increased, so too the history of the Dominican Order has constituted a major field of study, since the Dominicans were at the forefront of the cultural and religious life of Medieval cities. The combination of these two research fields precipitates a particularly fruitful topic that this conference intends to analyse: the reciprocal influences and interactions between the activities and works of Dominican intellectuals and the making of Florentine cultural identity through the social and political events that consumed the public life of the Commune between 1293 and 1313.

Firenze, il rinomato Comune, domina ancora oggi la visione storiografica dell'Italia medievale. La fondazione e crescita degli Ordini Mendicanti si sviluppa in modo parallelo alla rinascita urbana europea. Come è cresciuta l'attenzione nei confronti delle città medievali allo stesso modo la storia dell'Ordine domenicano ha costituito un maggiore campo di studio, dal momento che i domenicani costituivano l'avanguardia della vita culturale e religiosa delle città medievali. La combinazione di questi due ambiti di ricerca definisce il fruttuoso argomento che questa conferenza si propone di analizzare: le interazioni e influenze reciproche tra le attività ed opere degli intellettuali e il definirsi della identità culturale fiorentina attraverso gli avvenimenti sociali e politici che hanno travagliato la vita pubblica del Comune tra il 1293 e il 1313.
