The official founding ceremony of the university took place on a rainy 29 April 1833, and the first Dies academicus was celebrated on 29 April 1837 to commemorate the event. Since then, the anniversary has always been commemorated in spring.
The festive day is part of the ritual of university life. The President's report is read out, the ceremonial and state of the university address is given and honorary doctors and honorary senators are appointed. Prizes are also awarded annually, for example for outstanding academic work by students, excellent teaching or special commitment to the University of Zurich.
