The University of Zurich has improved its position in the current Academic Ranking of World Universities by five places. Within Switzerland, it is now second only to ETH Zurich.
The University of Zurich has climbed five places in the latest Academic Ranking of World Universities, making it 56th in the world. Within Europe, UZH is in 16th place (up four). The improvement is mainly due to gains in the assessment criteria for number of highly cited researchers, number of publications in the journals Nature and Science, and academic performance per capita.
In Switzerland, the University of Zurich comes ahead of the University of Geneva (59th), EPFL Lausanne (83rd) and the University of Basel (88th). ETH Zurich has dropped one place to 20th making it the fifth highest ranked European university.
US institutions dominate the top 20 of this ranking – as they do in other major university league tables: Harvard University again tops the list, followed by Stanford University and the University of Cambridge in the UK in second and third place respectively.
The Academic Ranking of World Universities, which has been compiled since 2003, rates more than 1,000 universities worldwide on the basis of factors including the number of Nobel Laureates and Fields Medalists among alumni or employed researchers, papers in Nature or Science, and number of highly cited researchers at the university (HiCi index). In addition, one single indicator takes into account the size of universities by measuring the publication performance of teaching staff.
