Low-Impact Mobility

UZH staff and students already get around in relatively sustainable ways: around three-quarters of journeys are taken by public transport, while private motorized transport is of only secondary importance. The options are limited for shifting more journeys to a public transport system already under heavy pressure. The greatest potential therefore lies in walking and cycling, although there are still shortfalls with regard to infrastructure, services and basic institutional conditions. That is exactly where the mobility and transport strategy comes in. It pools efforts, sets the direction of travel, and creates a basis from which to make mobility at UZH fit for the future.

As a work, study and meeting place, UZH relies on mobility that gives all staff, students and guests accessible entry to the everyday life of the university. “Healthy” means mobility that encourages exercise and increases a sense of wellbeing, “sustainable” the mindful use of energy, space and financial resources.

The vision can be broken down into eight priority aims:

1. Centrally coordinate, manage and continually optimize mobility services
2. Align with upstream strategies and create standards for downstream action
3. Promote wellbeing, health and safety
4. Network low-impact transport between sites, respecting the city’s wider needs
5. Use digital channels to share mobility-related information
6. Use UZH as a research subject and test innovative approaches
7. Collaborate closely with internal and external actors and cultivate UZH interests
8. Make decisions based on a valid, up-to-date body of data
