Studying Part-Time
Study Around Your Life
Both Bachelor's and Master's degree programs at the University of Zurich can usually* be completed on a full-time or part-time basis.
Full-Time Studies
In the full-time model, you concentrate primarily on your studies and mostly follow the standard curriculum set out in the program regulation.
Part-Time Studies
As a part-time student, you complete fewer modules (lectures, courses, etc.) per semester than in a regular full-time program. Part-time study therefore gives you the opportunity to study at UZH alongside work or caring responsibilities.
Studying part-time is not a different study model, it just depends on how students organize their studies. There is no requirement for special enrollment as a part-time student. This gives you the freedom to adjust your workload each semester according to your needs. For example, this would allow you to start your studies in part-time mode and then later switch to full-time to finish up your final semesters. In most cases* extending the duration of your studies isn’t a problem. Please note, however, that tuition fees are generally doubled after 12 semesters per academic level.
*The opportunities for part-time study and the relevant regulations (e.g. on extending the duration of study or the validity of ECTS credits acquired) vary depending on the study program and faculty. If you have questions about studying part-time, please contact the relevant advisory office at the faculty of your study program early on:
Faculty of Theology
Faculty of Law
Faculty of Business, Economics and Informatics
Faculty of Medicine
Vetsuisse Faculty
Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
Faculty of Science
Studying and High-Performance Sports
UZH supports students who wish to balance their degree program and high-performance sports. This depends on the degree program in question, the type of sport and what stage of the program you’re in. You’ll find more information on the Student Advisory Services website:
Advisory Services: Studying and High-Performance Sports
Study and Civilian Service/Military Service
At UZH, the dean's office at your faculty is responsible for reviewing and approving applications for a study-related deferment of military or civilian service. Please directly contact the Office of Student Affairs in the faculty where you are completing your major if you would like to submit an application.
Paid Employment and Financial AId
If you are funding your studies through paid employment and/or with the help of financial aid (e.g. scholarship or grant), we recommend that you consider the financial implications of part-time study at an early stage. Grants and scholarships are awarded for a limited time and, depending on your schedule, you may not be able to continue part-time work towards the end of your study program. If this applies to you, please consult the website of the Student Financial Aid Office in good time and explore your options.
