Dr. Daria Skwarzynska, Postdoc at the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology, has received the Research Recognition Award from the Swiss League Against Epilepsy for her project «Power restored: Exploring how neurons recharge to end seizures».

Dr. Martin Pacesa (as of January 2026: Assistant Professor at the Department of Pharmacology) has received the Peter and Traudl Engelhorn 2026 Research Award for the development of open-source platforms for computer-aided protein design.

Tim Fässler erhält für seine Masterarbeit am Geographischen Institut den Preis für Verkehrssicherheit der Dienstabteilung Verkehr der Stadt Zürich. In seiner Arbeit «Leave no one behind» untersucht Fässler die Zugänglichkeit der Stadt im Hinblick auf verschiedene Nutzungsgruppen. 

Dr. Jana Ordon, Department of Plant and Microbial Biology, received a L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Award.

Prof. Andreas E. Kremer has been awarded the 2025 Bernhard Lecture Award by the World Congress of Itch (WCI). The Bernhard Lecture honors outstanding clinical and scientific contributions to our understanding of itch mechanisms and treatment. Andreas E. Kremer is receiving the award for his translational work on systemic and cholestatic pruritus.

Prof. Dr. Florencia Canelli (Departement of Physics) has been named an APS Fellow 2025 by the American Physical Society (APS). APS Fellowships recognize excellence in physics and exceptional service to the physics community. Florencia Canelli receives this honor for her distinguished leadership in physics at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN and for significant contributions to the study of the top quark at the Large Hadron Collider and at the Tevatron at Fermilab.

Prof. Dr. Marc Janoschek (Departement of Physics and Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI)) was named an APS Fellow 2025 by the American Physical Society (APS). APS Fellowships recognize members for their outstanding efforts to advance physics. Marc Janoschek receives this honor "for groundbreaking contributions to revealing and understanding quantum states of strongly correlated materials through the innovative development and application of neutron-scattering techniques.”

 Prof. Dr. Nina Hartrampf, Professor at the Departement of Chemistry, received the DECHEMA Award for her pioneering contributions to process development and automation of methods for the production of complex and widely applicable peptides.

Prof. Dr. Helen Keller, Faculty of Law, was elected to the Institut de Droit international.

Prof. Dr. Sandra Luber, Professor for Computational Chemistry, receives the 2024 Walter Thiel Award. The award recognizes an outstanding scientific contribution of a young researcher based in a country affiliated to the European Chemical Society. The award is granted every two years.

Dr. Celestin Mutuyimana, postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Psychology, has been awarded the Ernst E. Boesch Prize for Cultural Psychology (Young Talent Award) 2025. The award is granted every two years.

Prof. Dr. Balthasar Bickel, Professor für Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft am Institut für Interdisziplinäre Sprachevolutionswissenschaft, wurde für die Jahre 2025 bis 2027 zum Mitglied sowie zum Vorsitzenden des Fachbeirats des Max-Planck-Instituts für evolutionäre Anthropologie in Leipzig ernannt.

Prof. Dr. Noah Bubenhofer, ausserordentlicher Professor für Deutsche Sprachwissenschaft am Deutschen Seminar, wurde in den Wissenschaftlichen Beirat des Leibniz-Instituts für Deutsche Sprache (IDS) gewählt.

Dr. Marine Borel, Lektorin für Französisch am Romanischen Seminar, wurde mit dem Grand prix de linguistique et de philologie der Académie royale de langue et de littérature françaises de Belgique ausgezeichnet.

Prof. Norbert Dillier, Professor Emeritus of Experimental Audiology, received the EFAS Lifetime Award 2025 provided by the European Federation of Audiology Societies for his lifetime achievements and contributions to audiology. The focus of his research projects was to better understand and improve the function of auditory protheses such as cochlear implants, auditory brainstem implants as well as conventional and implantable hearing aids.

Prof. Dr. Sara Fabrikant, Department of Geography, was elected a member of the Academia Europaea.

Prof. Dr. Andreas E. Kremer, Klinik für Gastroenterologie und Hepatologie des USZ, erhält einen Top Abstract Prize der United European Gastroenterology (UEG) Week 2025. In der prämierten Arbeit belegt er, dass ein innovativer Wirkstoff den quälenden Juckreiz bei Patientinnen und Patienten mit einer chronischen Lebererkrankung spürbar lindern kann.

Prof. Dr. Lukas Sommer at the Institute of Anatomy (dual professor of the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Science) was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.

Prof. Dr. Francesco Gardani, Assistenzprofessor für Romanische Philologie mit besonderer Berücksichtigung der italienischen Sprachwissenschaft am Romanischen Seminar, wurde zum Mitglied der Academia Europaea gewählt.

Dr. Celestin Mutuyimana, postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Psychology, was elected as Member of the Executive Board of the Swiss Young Academy (SYA). 

Prof. Dr. Rémi Abgrall, Professor at the Institute of Mathematics, received the Carl Friedrich von Siemens Research Award of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. It has been granted in recognition of his outstanding accomplishments in research and teaching to date.

Prof. Dr. Nina Hartrampf, Professor at the Departement of Chemistry, received the «Nachwuchswissenschaftler-Preis für Naturstoffforschung 2025» awarded by the DECHEMA Society for Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology.

Prof. Dr. Magdalini Polymenidou, Associate Professor of Biomedicine at the Department of Quantitative Biomedicine of the University of Zurich, was elected to the Membership of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO).

Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Mutlu Özcan, PhD, Director Clinic of Masticatory Disorders and Dental Biomaterials an der UZH, wurde von der İstinye Universität in Istanbul ihre zweite Ehrendoktorwürde verliehen. Dieser Titel wurde ihr aufgrund ihrer bedeutenden internationalen akademischen Beiträge auf dem Gebiet der Zahnmedizin verliehen.

Prof. Dr. Peter Picht, Faculty of Law, was elected president of the Academic Society for Competition Law (Ascola).

Die European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) benennt ihren renommierten Nachwuchsaward neu. Dieser bisher als «Allergy Award» bekannte Preis trägt nun den Namen  «Cezmi Akdis Prize», benannt nach dem Direktor des Schweizerischen Instituts für Allergie- und Asthmaforschung (SIAF) und Ordinarius an der Medizinischen Fakultät der UZH.

Kiran Kappeler has been awarded the 2025 Dissertation Award by the Swiss Association of Communication and Media Research (SGKM/SSCM/SACM). She completed her PhD at the Department of Communication and Media Research (IKMZ) last summer and is now a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Tracking and Society at the University of Copenhagen.

Carsten Wagner, Professor at the Department of Physiology, is the recipient of an award from the European Renal Association (ERA) for outstanding basic science contributions to nephrology.

Prof. Dr. Ben Schuler, a dual professor of the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Science in the Department of Biochemistry, was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.

Prof. Dr. Laura Baudis, Professor of Experimental Physics, was elected as an international member of the National Academy of Sciences. The National Academy of Sciences selected Laura Baudis in recognition of her outstanding and continuing achievements in basic research.

Prof. Dr. Nina Hartrampf, Professor at the Departement of Chemistry, received the “ADUC Young Talent Award 2025” awarded by the Association of German University Professors of Chemistry (ADUC) from the German Chemical Society.

Prof. Dr. Andreas Victor Walser, Professor für Geschichte der Alten Kulturen vom östlichen Mittelmeer bis zum Mittleren Osten am Historischen Seminar, wurde in den Wissenschaftlichen Beirat der Kommission für Alte Geschichte und Epigraphik des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts in München gewählt. 

Hans-Christoph Steinhausen, professor emeritus of child and adolescent psychiatry, has been named 2024 Highly Ranked Scholar Lifetime by Scholar GPS in all fields of scholarly endeavor, in the field of medicine and in the field of adolescence.

Das Projekt «Spatial Sustainable Finance» des Geographischen Instituts der UZH, der ZHAW School of Management and Law und der ZHAW School of Life Sciences and Facility Management wurde mit dem Geospatial World Excellence Award 2025 for Environmental and Social Impact ausgezeichnet. Drei UZH-Angehörige sind im Projektkonsortium: Alexander Damm-Reiser (Professor für Remote Sensing of Water Systems), Maria J. Santos (Professorin für Earth System Science) und Leon Hauser (Postdoktorand in beiden Arbeitsgruppen). Ziel des Projekts ist die Entwicklung eines wissenschaftlich fundierten Ansatzes für die Bewertung von Unternehmen im Hinblick auf ihren Einfluss auf die Umweltzerstörung.

Die Geospatial World Awards sind eine international anerkannte Auszeichnung für vorbildliche Praktiken in der globalen Geospatial-Industrie.

Prof. Dr. Dr. Andreas Maercker ist in die renommierte wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft Academia Europaea gewählt worden. Der Psychologe und Traumaforscher ist nun Mitglied der Sektion «The Human Mind and its Complexity» sowie angeschlossen an die Sektion «Social Processes and Social Changes». Ziel der 1988 in Cambridge gegründeten Academia Europaea ist es, Forschung und Bildung in Europa zu fördern und den internationalen und interdisziplinären Austausch zu stärken.

David Yanagizawa-Drott, Professor of Development and Emerging Markets and Affiliated Professor at the UBS Center, has been awarded the Yrjö Jahnsson Award from the European Economic Association (EEA). Yanagizawa shares this award with Julia Cagé, Professor of Economics (Sciences Po Paris). This award recognizes their work on political economy and the media, based on deep historical research in France, the USA, and Africa.

Prof. Dr. Olivier Devuyst, Institut für Physiologie der UZH, wurde von König Philippe von Belgien mit dem Ehrentitel «Commandeur de l’Ordre de Léopold» ausgezeichnet. Diese Ehrung würdigt seine Verdienste in Lehre und Forschung sowie seine wissenschaftliche Laufbahn. Der Leopold-Orden ist die höchste Auszeichnung des Königreichs Belgien.

Dr. Olivia Eilers Smith, PhD, Postdoktorandin am Institut für Veterinäranatomie, Arbeitsgruppe Prof. Kowalewski, wurde für ihren Beitrag: «Oxygen Depletion and HIF1α Regulate Steroidogenesis in Granulosa Cells by Affecting Significant Players in Cholesterol Provision: A Multi-Omics Approach», mit einem Preis der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Reproduktionsmedizin (DGRM) 2025 ausgezeichnet (Autorenschaft: Olivia E. Smith, Luiz A. Berto Gomes, Mariusz P. Kowalewski).
Die DGRM-Preise werden jährlich für herausragende wissenschaftliche Beiträge zur interdisziplinären human-veterinärmedizinischen Reproduktionsmedizin verliehen.
Das Projekt wird durch ein SNF-Grant finanziert.

Vice President Christian Schwarzenegger has been awarded the prestigious Order of the Rising Sun by the Japanese government. He is being honored for his contribution to academic exchange and to promoting mutual understanding between Japan and Switzerland.

Prof. Dr. Lena Rohrbach, Professorin für Nordische Philologie am Deutschen Seminar, wurde zum Mitglied der Königlichen Gustav-Adolfs-Akademie für schwedische Volkskultur (Kungliga Gustav Adolfs Akademien för svensk folkkultur) ernannt.

Dr. Moritz F. Adam, Habilitand am Lehrstuhl für alttestamentliche Wissenschaft und frühjüdische Religionsgeschichte der Theologischen und Religionswissenschaftlichen Fakultät, wird mit dem FAN Award im Fachbereich Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften für seine Arbeit zu «Zeitkonzeptionen und Apokalyptik im Hellenistischen Judentum» ausgezeichnet.

Dr. Stefania Ionescu, Postdoktorandin in der  Forschungsgruppe Social Computing Group am Institut für Informatik wird mit dem FAN Award im Fachbereich Rechts- und Wirtschaftswissenschaften für ihre Arbeit zu «Society as a Stakeholder: Understanding the Societal Impact of Systems Allocating Visibility Algorithmically» ausgezeichnet.

Dr. Dominik Groos, Postdoktorand am Brain Research Institute der Medizinischen Fakultät, wird mit dem FAN Award im Fachbereich Medizin und Naturwissenschaften für seine Arbeit zu «Regulation von Entscheidungen unter Risiko durch die laterale Habenula» ausgezeichnet.

Prof. Dr. Philipp Homan, Professor an der Medizinischen Fakultät der UZH und  stv. Klinikdirektor und Chefarzt an der Erwachsenenpsychiatrie und Psychotherapie der Psychiatrischen Universitätsklinik Zürich, wird im Mai 2025 den mit CHF 20’000 dotierten Inger Salling Preis für Psychiatrie erhalten. Mit diesem Preis wird seine Forschung im Bereich Sprache und Künstliche Intelligenz gewürdigt.

Dr. Petra Seebeck, Fachtierärztin für Versuchstierkunde und Managerin des UZH-Zentrums Zürcher Integrative Nagetier-Physiologie (ZIRP), erhält zusammen mit Dr. Stephan Zeiter (AO Research Institute Davos) den Culture of Care Award 2024 des Swiss 3R Competence Centre (3RCC). Mit dem Preis wird die Initiative zur Förderung von Good Surgical Practice (GSP) in der Chirurgie bei Nagetieren gewürdigt. Die Initiative hat sowohl das Tierwohl als auch die Forschungsqualität erheblich verbessert, wie 3RCC festhält.
